In a news conference Wednesday, Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s Chief Administrative Officer Charlotte Ipsan said that hospital staff has plans in place to ensure they are able to accommodate all of their patients.

“From an operations perspective in our facilities we have plans and we are not concerned that we would not be able to take care of our community so from that perspective we are ok but from a health and wellbeing standpoint however all of us should be concerned and we need to slow the spread of this virus,” said Ipsan.

As of Wednesday, NHC had 221 hospitalized patients, making it the highest number of COVID-19 patients they have had in their facilities.

Of those patients, 45 are in the Intensive Care Unit and 30 are on a ventilator.

However, Ipsan explained that while the numbers of hospitalized patients has increased, the number of patients in the ICU is only about 25 percent compared to the 45 percent it was during the summer.

NHC hospital capacity is about 1,500 patients. On Wednesday, 1,056 of those beds were being utilized.

Baptist Health Louisville currently has 96 hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Baptist Health Public Relations Manager Julie Garrison said that hospital staff is aware that the positive cases are surging and they are making sure to be prepared to care for their patients.

“While cases are increasing, we are well prepared with resources including PPE, surge capacity and staffing,” said Garrison.

“One of the strengths of Baptist Health is the ability to share best practices, resources and supplies among our nine hospitals. We are encouraging staff to stay safe while out in the community by wearing masks and practicing social distancing. We urge our community members to do the same to slow the spread of COVID-19.”

Ipsan said that as the holidays are approaching, the community must be cautions and make sure they are continuously following social distancing guidelines.

“We need to do all of those things all of the time and address the good things as they come too but the best news would be for all of us to pitch in and slow this virus,” said Ipsan.
